The Village of Northport counted 7,347 residents at the 2020 census on about 2.3 square miles of land, with Northport Harbor on its western side. It was not formally incorporated until 1894, and when it was, it became the first village in the Town of Huntington to incorporate. Most of the village is made up of the low, steep hills of the Harbor Hill Moraine running down to a highly sheltered harbor, and the shoreline still carries a reminder of what those hills are made of: Steers Pit, a large depression carved into the cliffs beside the harbor by sand mining that began in 1923 and ended in the 1950s.

The village's own flood damage prevention law acknowledges that potential and actual damages from flooding may be a problem for its residents, and on steep streets that run down toward the harbor, a heavy rain moves a lot of water fast. Two situations are typical on hilly lots like these: a driveway pitched toward the garage door, which puts runoff on the apron and the first few feet of the floor, and a garage or basement cut into the slope, which takes groundwater along its uphill wall. The first is fixed outside, with a trench drain, a regraded apron or a raised threshold, and the coating is carried tight to the door so water cannot get under its edge. The second is a moisture-mitigation primer job, specified from readings taken along the uphill wall, because on moraine ground the wet side and the dry side of the same slab can read very differently.
